Everything but OTG (resolved for now)

- Reviewed in the United States on May 17, 2019Bought one of these long ago for testing with multiple Android phones but never got it to work.
Just happened to plug it into ASUS Zenphone Max (M1) this week and all of a sudden message popped up indicating *Ethernet Port Detected* and offering settings for static IP address.
Works perfect. Plug and play. But CRITICAL your phone must have Ethernet drivers.
Called ASUS tech support and asked HOW to identify phones that have Ethernet drivers vs. those that do not. The answer was that ANY ASUS PHONE WITH OTG is good for Ethernet.
THIS WAS AN EDUCATION IN OTG - USB On The Go. It allows phone to act as USB hub and you can connect mouse, keyboard, storage, and other USB devices.
This dongle allows you to connect Ethernet cable to one end and other end to phone connector and get a DHCP wired connection with NO setup. There is a third connector for a PC, but not using it currently.
Previously, we bought more expensive rugged Android devices that have Ethernet cradle option.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 9, 2018I really hoped this would work with my Galaxy S8+, which is why I purchased the OTG version of this device. I got it to work once with my phone (using OTG connector) immediately after disconnecting the device from a Windows laptop. It takes time (i.e. not immediate but less than a minute) for the lights on the device to come on and only when both the network cable and connected device (laptop) are both connected together. Perhaps the phone isn't sending out enough power through to the device but I am not an engineer and one success is NOT a good sampling to establish a solid theory.
After multiple attempts at installing for use on an OSX device (took me more than an hour) I did finally get this to work on my 13" MacBook Air (Mid 2012) running 10.13.6 and it appears to still be working. The trick for me was to remove the network device type from Network settings (see picture) and allow it to reinstall when seen again (only did the removal once).
Windows devices were plug and play.
The reason I am giving this 3 rating is because it didn't meet the expectations for which it was purchased (OTG). Had I known it would not work with my Samsung Galaxy S8+, I would have purchased a USB 3.0 device for my laptops instead of the USB 2.0 to work with OTG.
I am happy with UGREEN and will purchase some of their other accessories (including a USB 3.0 version of this device w/o OTG). As it's not worth going through the effort to return this item (which was under $15) I’ll just keep it as a spare.
**** Update 8/11/18 - (Changing review from a 3 to 4 star) I ordered a UGREEN USB OTC Cable which arrived today and the device appears to be working (will check a few more times and update this review if my experience changes). While I interpret the devices description as expecting it to work WITHOUT the need of an OTG adapter (and perhaps it would with a direct micro USB connection instead of a phone with USB-C utilizing an adapter) I was happy to learn that I will be able to use this device after all. The extra expense will be usefull since my other OTG adapters are too big to be used in conjunction with my existing phone case anyway.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 11, 2017Great little ethernet adapter. Works well with my Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 9.7. I love that I can use it with my tablet and my laptop (not at the same time); great for travelling. This is my second UGREEN product and I am happy with both. However, keep in mind that this adapter gives you internet access, which is not the same as mobile data. I wish some apps would work with both. But this is an app-issue and not the adapter's fault.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 20, 2017I really wanted to use this with my phone but unfortunately, it'snot compatible with my LG G4. But, it works for most tablets.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 19, 2016I purchased this item to use for my Chromebook for traveling and at work. I have no complaints so far, it was easy to use (just plug and play) and it was portable enough to just toss in my computer bag. I've only used it a few times so I cannot comment on durability but so far I am quite pleased with my purchase. It's great to have just in case there is no WiFi available.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 24, 2016Says it works on some android devices. Just not on any of the 4 different ones I tried
- Reviewed in the United States on February 10, 2018Works with my Kindle Fire, Chrome Book, Nintendo Switch (in docking station). It didnt work with Kindle Paper white. I havent tried it with the Nexus 5 yet, but dont think I will use it for that anyway. I think this is a handy little tool and will be put to good use over time.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 6, 2018I recently purchased the Insignia Windows 1o Tablet because I was told it connected to ethernet thru plug ins but it has no ports or USB capability, only WiFi. I gave up my Wifi router when I gave up smartphones. With all the deadly effects of WiFi I figured I would be better off with just a modem for Ethernet. So I ordered this to connect to the tablet and the Tablet says "No Internet". Come on, I got internet aplenty on my PC with the same plug in so why does the Tablet not recognize it ? Today I had to put in an order to get a router again just to operate the Tablet and this Adaptor was a waste of money.

5.0 out of 5 stars Buen producto
Fácil de usar, funcional y hasta ahora sin ningún problema, recomendado. Muy útil para cuando un equipo no cuenta con puerto ethernet o cuando necesitas conectar tu celular por medio de cable.

5.0 out of 5 stars Easy to use, no installation needed
Worked very well on a pc and the wii. No drivers to install, the computer automatically detected the ethernet connection. Only default it is limited to 100mbps but if I abselutely needed faster speed I would have bough something else.
Pros : Easy to install, just plug it and it works
Cable is long enough to remove the dongle of the way
Works with android phones
Cons :
100mbps instead of 1gbps (it's not dramatic, most user don't need it)
Final thoughts:
Great Ethernet over USB adapter. Must have for people with laptops, console or android phone with no wifi around.
