A nicely designed unit with excellent individual RGB lighting, with workable but not elegant configuration software.

A nicely designed unit with excellent individual RGB lighting, with workable but not elegant configuration software.
This is only my second Razer product as until now I have always been a fan of Logitech products. I have been using Logitech's G13 Gaming Key Pad but wanted to upgrade to a unit with mechanical keys and individual RGB lighting for each key. This unit from Razer fit the bill nicely. It is a smaller size than the G13 and has adjustments for the palm rest and thumb keypad. All of the keys are reachable without having to remove your hands from the palm rest. It is also possible to program multiple key profiles for a single game with quick action keys to switch between the different profiles on the fly. I also like the cloud based saves of the gaming profiles making them available on any computer where I am using the device, but understand for some forcing an internet connection to use the product is a deal breaker. With my Logitech G13 I have lost all of the gaming profiles twice and never have figured out where they are stored so they could be backed up. Reprogramming game profiles for over 700+ games was no fun and one of the reasons I decided to switch. That said Logitech software is a step above what you get from Razer Synapse. Don't get me wrong, Synapse is workable, but you have to work much harder because the multiple device integration is not as tight as it is with Logitech Gaming Software. Example, I now own a Razer BlackWidow Chroma keyboard, a Nega Hex V2 mouse and a FireFly mouse pad. With Logitech's software the device integration is so tight that one profile is shared between each device making key assignments and game specific macros a breeze to manage. The same level of integration is simply not possible with Synapse. To do the same thing under Synapse, I had to create a unique profile for each of the Razer devices and reprogram every key. Macros created in Synapse are shared between all of the devices, and while this does work, it is almost a disadvantage as it requires a special prefix to keep the macros straight between different games. I have contacted Razer support and submitted several enhancement requests based on my experience with Logitech and they have agreed to implement a few of them. Still all in all, this product was easy to install, is very easy to learn to program and the lighting options make finding the correct key very easy. Also being able to switch key maps on the fly is a huge help. Another area where Logitech's products have an advantage over Razer is in default game profiles. With Razer you have to program each and every one yourself. Logitech's game software will automatically detect hundreds of different games and import the default game profiles on the fly. At Razer there are a ton of lighting profiles for interesting effects, but these are no help when it comes to configuring the device for actual games. Last, one other area that Logitech does better is the joy stick feature on their G13. It is a real joy stick and can be used as such in any game. On the Orbweaver Chroma, they use an 8 position rotary switch. It can be programmed to sort of mimic what the G13 can do but it is not quite the same. I am finding that I hardly ever use this feature of the unit, while I used the Joy Stick on the G13 quite a lot. I haven't sold the G13 yet and may end up going back to it, but overall, in spite of the concerns listed, the Orbweaver is a very nice addition to my gaming set up, and an advantage in games. Oh, one other quick note. The Orbweaver Chroma is much lighter than the G13(12oz vs 1lb 4oz). Some users may find it has a tendency to move while in game while the G13's extra weight avoids the issue. A couple of other issues to remember if you are trying to choose between the two devices is that the logitech has a built in LCD screen that provides system information, game information and allows you to switch profiles on the fly as well as a on the in game macro feature. With Razer you need to switch profiles using the Synapse software. Finally the G13 has on-board memory that stores a few of the profiles for off-line gaming while as mentioned earlier the Orbweaver needs access to the cloud.

This will be a review for the Orbweaver and Tartarus, as I own both.

      Orbweaver:

I used the Razer Orbweaver for over four years before I replaced it with the Tartarus v2. During that time, I easily played over 3000 hours on it. It's much more ergonomic and comfortable than a keyboard for long play sessions. Your hand won't feel cramped using it and it's well worth the investment.

      Pros:
      - Physically customizable to fit your exact hand size.
      - Much better than a keyboard for extended play sessions.
      - Software customizes keybindings.
      - Long-lasting

      Cons:
      - Glue known to give out. I just cleaned it off and applied my own superglue. Problem solved.
      - 'Alt' button was wearing out and I couldn't find a replacement. Still worked though, and not too bad for that many hours of use.
      - Newest Razer software (Synapse 3.0) doesn't support it, so you have to use their legacy software (Synapse 2.0). This wasn't a problem for me, but made clear their intention for planned obsolescence.
      - Pressing any of the buttons on the thumb part causes the whole section to move slightly. Meh.

      Tartarus:

I just recently purchased the Tartarus, but there's already some noticeable quality-of-life changes from the Orbweaver. The wrist rest is more comfortable and the keys are more responsive - I wish my Razer keyboard had the same ones. It's a welcome upgrade, and surprisingly less expensive than its older brother.

Pro/Con: The Tartarus is less physically customizable than the Orbweaver, but that means it is more solid. When I would press the 'Alt' button on the Orbweaver, it would slightly move the whole thumb apparatus. But the thumb and main hand are a single solid piece on the Tartarus. So it's more solid, but less customizable. Overall, I like it more this way.

      Pros:
      - Like the Orbweaver, solid construction and great software support.
      - The directional pad has a 'hat' on it which can be removed for a more traditional d-pad.
      - Padded wrist rest is a welcome addition.
      - New keys are amazing.

      Cons:
      - As mentioned above, less physically customizable.
      - I'm undecided on the new placement of the scroll wheel. It's a bit janky and might take some getting used to.
      - Synapse has the 'right' d-pad button listed as up (same with the Orbweaver). This doesn't make any sense to me. More of a software issue than a hardware issue, but you may want to be aware of it for when you start to program your keybinds.

The item came in great condition. I have been enjoying it the second I took the item out of the box.
Now there is an issue that came up but it’s not a deal breaker, well at least for me it wasn't, for those who purchase this item this year, or late 2019, keep in mind that in order for the Razer software to pick up the orbweaver chroma gaming keypad, you must download the razer synaps 2.0 Legacy. There is a version for both mac, and windows. Keep in mind if you attempt to download the Legacy 2.0 software and you already have the newest version of the Razer synaps installed, it may ask you to ether modify, repair, or remover. I don't know what fixed it but here's what I did. When the software downloaded, I chose the first option which was modify. that was incorrect for me because I already had the newest version of Razer synaps installed. The reason why I chose that option was because there were some files from the newer synaps that where conflict with the Legacy file. Once it finished, I restarted the pc and it gave me an error and I was not able to finish the download. I went to the windows 10 bar and searched uninstall, and it gives you the option to add or remove programs in your computer, at least that is how it works for windows. There you can completely uninstall the Razer synaps 2.0 Legacy from the pc, and that what I did. Once I did that, I tried to download another file form the razer's website on the software tab, then I clinked the remove option, which was the third option in the program maintenance window that pops up. Afterwards, I follow the prompts and eventually the installShield Wizard finished downloading. After all that I restarted my pc once again. After the computer restarted the pc detected the Razer orbweaver chroma gaming keypad. And the Legacy synaps 2.0 was working fine, and I was able to use the newest version of the synaps for my Razer Nari Ultimate.
Now, I know that this may sound like a total pain in the butt, but the process was not really explained in the box. I hope that this helps some of you that had similar problems.
Overall the item works great, it has mechanical keys, and beautiful lightning effects.
I will be updating my review as time passes.

5.0 out of 5 stars good alternative for the discontinued g13
Reviewed in Canada on August 13, 2019
I've had mine since the 27th of July as my old G13 finally crapped out, and I've been using it every day. The Synapse software you have to download to map the keys works well, and seems to allow all the same functionality as the G13 did, and you can tweak all the rgb with it as well.

      PROS:
      1) mechanical keys - so much nicer than the gel-pad buttons of the G13
      2) braided cord
      3) adjustable dimensions; you can adjust the length, width, and palm rest - it not being a one-size-fits-all is great
      4) easy to use software

      CONS:
      1) not as big as the G13 - If like me you have large hands, even at the max size adjustments, it might not fit your hand
      as well as the G13
      2) not as many buttons as the G13 - this might be a fly poop out of pepper gripe, but after years of using the G13, trying to learn a new button layout was tough for the first little while
      3) mechanical keys noise - definitely louder than the g13(more of a waning than a CON) - after a day I was used to it, and now prefer it, but if someone has never used a mechanical keyboard before, they are loud/noisy
      4) palm rest wiggles/moves - due to the way it is built even with the adjustment pin locked in place, the plam rest will slightly wiggle/move front to back
      5) width adjustment does not lock - only slight pressure on the thumb stick area is needed to push it back towards the center

Overall I am happy with it, and seeing as I can't get the G13 anymore, this is a really good option.

On a whim I decided to retire my trusty Nostromo N52, that had served me extremely well. Well, I thought it had, until I received and started using the Orbweaver. It was like upgrading from a 15 year old keyboard to a brand new mechanical one. Odd, that.

Superb device, excellent configurability. A bit pricey, for sure.

5.0 out of 5 stars 現行のRAZER商品にはないメカニカル軸の左手用デバイス
Reviewed in Japan on April 20, 2020
