- Reviewed in the United States on October 29, 2019I purchased this to record what I see on my computer monitor in basically the same quality as what I see. Note normally I have my PC set to output 1080 as that is what my monitor is but 1080 results in a file much(almost 2x larger) than 720 and no real difference in picture quality so when recording I set my PC to output 720. Also there are 3 recording picture quality settings on the Avermedia and while I played around with all 3 I ended up on MAX TIME(10mBps) which again basically mirrors what I see on my display. I'm recording non CP'd streaming of old TV programs and musical clips and for that the Avermedia device works quite well and even has some crude editing which is nice. I didn't have much luck with the included USB3 thumb drive but I hooked up a older 500GB Toshiba portable USB powered HDD and it works great, I believe giving me something like 100hrs at my quality setting. Note even set to 720 on my PC and the highest compression on the Avermedia it still takes about 4.5GB(standard SL DVD) to hold about 1hrs worth of recording, best to stick with HDDs or maybe BDs if you want optical media.
I configured mine to output a passthru signal all the time, even when off and I turned off live option??(so you could see more OSDs) as having it set that way degraded the picture(text) too much for my liking.
Overall I'm happy with the device for what it does.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 6, 2016I had good luck with the AVerMedia Live Gamer Portable, so I thought I'd upgrade to this - BIG MISTAKE. This device simply won't work with any drives I have. I tried 8G & 64G USB sticks, a 1TB hard drive, and a 2TB SSD. All were brand new drives and freshly formatted with the required NTFS partition. The EzRecorder finally recognized one of the USB drives but refused to install the latest firmware from the drive.
This has the potential to be a very nice product, but for now it's so half-baked that it's totally useless.
I'm returning it as defective.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 10, 2017This review is for the Avermedia Ezrecorder 130 personal recorder. Summary of top features: 1) Excellent quality 2) Record at least 14 hours at a time 3) Playback on the same device.
Like its name the Ezrecorder is indeed easy to use, and the video and audio quality are great. What a revelation to be able to record HDMI from my Fire TV or other device and get quality video. As mentioned by others, it is possible to strip off HDCP copyright protection by using certain HDMI splitters. (Mine is a Ckitze - it's great to be able to record "anything" like in the days of VCRs! ) A convenient Pass Thru option can be turned on in the Ezrecorder's Settings, allowing the signal to pass through to the TV even if the Ezrecorder is off.
Storage must be attached - I bought a 1TB external hard drive, the Seagate Backup Plus. (2TB is the max size which the Ezrecorder handles.) The Ezrecorder has a remote which needs pointing but otherwise works well.
I am only recording manually - simply pressing Record. (Fyi, another reviewer says it will record up to 14 hours for each recording.) The other night I recorded 7.4 hours of live streaming tennis doubles from Roland Garros without any issues. (Note, other brand devices often won't record that long, or break up the recording into 1-hour segments.) Fyi the 7.4 hours resulted in a 20GB mp4 video file. (About 50 such 7-hour videos would fit on a 1TB usb drive.) For me the size is not a problem, as I just watch and then delete. But I believe there is free software such as Handbrake which will compress an mp4 file if desired.
Another fabulous feature is that the Ezrecorder includes playback! Now that sounds pretty basic, but in fact most similar devices force the user to disconnect the usb drive, connect it to a PC, and play the video from there. Only irritating issue during Ezrecorder playback is if you press Stop and then Play, the device does not remember where it left off and starts over. So it is advisable first to pause temporarily and note the stopping position, for example 2 hours 47 minutes. Or only press Pause instead of Stop - it will hold the position all day, probably indefinitely. Btw if you do have to fast forward through the recording, the FF speeds go up to 32x which is pretty fast.
Re the hdmi cables, I use Amazon Basics high speed cables. Articles online say most hdmi cables are alike, but in fact I initially used another brand high speed cable for one of these connections, and it degraded the quality slightly. Luckily I had another of the amazons available - voila la difference. It is equally important that the cable be labeled "high speed", otherwise you are buying the older hdmi standard. The simplest setup of the Ezrecorder would require two hdmi cables. If using a splitter there would be three hdmi cables in all, one being output from the Fire TV device (or other device) which is input to the splitter; a second which is output from the splitter and input to the Ezrecorder; and a third which is output from the Ezrecorder and input to the TV.
A further note for "advanced" users only. One can buy an hdmi switch (the opposite of a splitter) which has 3-5 input ports, e.g. for Fire TV, game box, chromecast, PC etc. A good hdmi switch comes with a remote for selecting which input will connect to the Ezrecorder at any given time. However I would suggest incorporating an hdmi switch into the configuration later, when you are familiar with the Ezrecorder's excellent quality and can judge whether a particular hdmi switch provides the same high quality.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 28, 2019It's kind of awkward to review this device, because on the one hand, they clearly got so much wrong in making it. Some of the frustrations from a user-interface standpoint, would be part of a good comedy routine... if it were someone else pulling their hair out trying to use it that is. But on the other hand, once you get it set up, and learn to live with all the BS, it does actually produce nice results, and there aren't many alternatives to this product.
Cons:
A. Ridiculous interface (red LED means it's either working perfectly or not working, take your pick for example)
B. Mostly-worthless user manual
C. Terrible, Clunky on-screen interface, that isn't even intuitive to bring up, much less use.
D. Ridiculous requirements for usb-drive compatibility, and their recommendation on how to set up a drive like that turns out to be as bad as most things about this product.
Pros: At the end of the day, once you get it set up and learn how to negotiate through the awful design of the thing... you get good results. I can't argue with the video that I'm getting out, and am happy that I got this device.
So... do I recommend it? Uhhhh, sure, I guess, what options are there really?

5.0 out of 5 stars This thing is great!
The hard drive in my Bell PVR died and I couldn't get another drive to work with it, so I got one of these and it works great. I use a cheap component to HDMI converter from the PVR to the EzRecorder though. I did get an HDMI splitter, but didn't bother trying it yet cuz it's not my main TV, and it looks fine the way it is. Anyway, this thing works great, and is the only unit I saw that would allow you to record and play back, all from the little box and an external drive. It came with a usb stick, but it didn't work worth a damn to record to, so maybe it was just for updating the unit, but I didn't bother trying to do any firmware updates or anything, it just worked outa the box all simple like. Now I can toss my external drive on a PC and backup recordings I wanna keep, and if I blow another drive, who cares! Shipped fast and works perfect outa the box for me.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sencillo de utilizar y practico
Yo lo utilizo para grabar desde sistema de cable y me funcionó a la perfección. Graba a 1920x1080p.
